TRENDS 2020: ECO-MATERIALS

DESIGN TRENDS

ECO-MATERIALS

So hey, peeps! During this time, it's giving us a lot of opportunities to reflect on all sorts of things. And, when you think about it, it's astounding the length's that our Mother Earth has gone to try and save her own life. She has halted daily life as we know it - globally. There are no planes in the sky, the Grand Canal in Venice is crystal clear and filled with swans and plankton. And, according to scientist’s in Europe and the US, CO2 emissions have drastically reduced by 50% in some places like NYC for example. So what's this mean? Well… now would be the time to start thinking about how we quickly we can adapt to greener alternatives in business and life, so we come out of this gentler. And not just gentler on ourselves and others, but for the sake of the Big Kahuna herself, Momma E.

We believe the industry will change, but it will take a village (that means all of us!) and this requires us to demand more responsible manufacturing, packaging, shipping and sustainable products options at better prices. When the demand is there, it will happen!

And over the year, as a part of our 2020 trends series, we'll be posting eco-friendly tips, design options, fun solutions and ideas.

It's just a little something to give back and help us all be more aware and remind us that we can do our bit. Let’s shine a light where we can to help our one-and-only Mother Nature, our beloved families, friends and animals!

With that said, on a recent quest for recycled material for a new kitchen island worktop for a client, we came across the company Smile Plastics.

Smile are an innovative design and manufacturing company run by Adam Fairweather and Rosalie McMillan who create panels from waste materials. And not only do they create beautiful panels seen in Selfridges or The Ace Hotel in Shoreditch to name a couple, but you can commission Smile to create practically anything for your project! They state on their website that bespoke products could take up to 3-4 months, so just keep that in mind.

And best of all?

Better than being highly versatile, 100% recycled, 100% recyclable and zero VOC off-gassing you ask? Well for those of us working in the UK, Smile Plastics is local! Yes, that's right, they're based in Gower South Wales and launching a London showroom in 2020. So not only will we be supporting a small business but, we also reduce our carbon footprint by remaining local. Lucky us ;)

And last but not least, please, let's chat! We are far from perfect on the sustainable front but looking to educate ourselves and do what we can as much as possible. In the comments section below, we'd love for you also to share your eco-experience, tips, tricks and ideas to help make all of us in our industry better quicker!

Here’s the link to a stunning free e-book for children called; Is This my home?

Produced by Danish ORSTED who produced this in a bid to help parents explain to their children why we need to take care of the place we all call home.
